Deornoth’s People by Gary Kitching

Read by Steve Byron

Originally from Darlington Gary Kitching is a theatre maker, playwright, actor, comedian and poet. Gary was approached to write something in response to the town as part of the ‘It’s All happening Here’ project.

Deornoth’s People is his take on the epic poem, inspired by Beowulf, and charts the histories of Darlington’s story. From its beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement chosen for its location and rich water offered by the (now named) river Skerne to the post industrial town we know today.

Listen to its tale that tells of the town’s journey from it’s very beginnings, it’s varied changes in name, the battles and landscapes. It’s resting place of Saints, markets and trading posts. It’s growth, it’s families and heritage.
